The thematic walk leads visitors into the unique world of Miskolc’s historic city center, where various religious traditions, architectural eras, and historical layers meet within just a few hundred meters.

During the program, participants can discover the city’s spiritual and cultural heritage through the emblematic sites of different denominations.

Orthodox and Baroque Masterpieces:
From Icons to the Twin-Towered Church

The starting point of the sightseeing walk is the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, famous for housing Central Europe’s largest iconostasis. This 16-meter-high masterpiece, featuring 87 scenes, depicts episodes from the life of Jesus, offering a unique insight into the richness of Orthodox religious art.

The 18th-century Downtown Reformed Church, also known as the “Rooster Church” (Kakas-templom), is one of the definitive Neoclassical buildings of Miskolc’s historic city center. Its tower houses the city’s largest bell, the Eszter Bell, which was cast in memory of Eszter Bató, who passed away at a young age, and still rings on special occasions today. The Misi Nyilas House is located near the church , where a memorial room preserves the history of the Bató family, further enriching the cultural significance of the site

Our next stop is the Minorite Church of the Assumption on Heroes’ Square (Hősök tere). Built in the 18th century, this Baroque-style, twin-towered church is the city’s largest Catholic ecclesiastical building and a defining element of Miskolc’s cityscape.

In the Footsteps of Jewish Heritage: Remembrance and a City Walk Toward the Avas

During the walk, participants will also visit the Miskolc Synagogue, which was built based on the designs of Ludwig Förster. The memorial plaques at the site pay tribute to the Jewish community deported from Miskolc and its surroundings in 1944, thus this point of the program also evokes a poignant chapter of the city’s history.

The route continues through the city center toward the Avas, bringing Miskolc’s iconic streets, squares, and stories to life. The program offers insight into the past and present of everyday urban life while connecting the enduring memories of various sacred sites.

Miskolc's Oldest Church: The Meeting of Gothic Style and Religious Diversity

The final stop of the tour is the Avas Reformed Church, the oldest church in Miskolc. A unique feature of the building is its entire wooden roof structure, which was built without any metal components and represents an outstanding value in Hungarian ecclesiastical architecture.

The “In the Footsteps of Sacred Places” walk offers a complex experience where religious heritage, the built environment, and urban stories reinforce one another. Throughout the program, participants gain a comprehensive overview of Miskolc’s diverse past and cultural identity while taking part in a meaningful guided sightseeing tour.

The “In the Footsteps of Sacred Places” thematic walk is currently under preparation due to the ongoing renovation of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. The works are expected to be completed in May-June 2026, after which the program will become available to visitors.
