This thematic experience tour leads participants from the historic city center of Miskolc to one of the city’s most uniquely atmospheric areas, the Avas, where the past and present form a distinctive unity. During the program, the urban walk and the gastronomic experience are closely intertwined, providing participants with a complex picture of Miskolc’s cultural heritage and its traditions linked to wine culture.
Downtown Icons: A Walk in the Footsteps of History and Culture
The walk departs from in front of the Tourinform Office and continues through the historic city center, passing the area of the Szinva Terrace and the building of the National Theatre of Miskolc.
Along the route, in addition to the city’s iconic landmarks, the stories that shaped Miskolc’s everyday life, as well as its literary and cultural scene, come to life.
The Avas Cellar Row: Centuries-Old Cellars and the Heritage of Miskolc Wine Culture
The bustling city center is soon replaced by the calmer, more natural environment of the Avas. The narrow streets, centuries-old cellars, and press houses of the Avas cellar row reveal a unique world that tells the story of Miskolc’s past as a wine-producing and trading hub. Nearly 800 cellars can be found in the area, with histories closely intertwined with the development of the city. Memories of the former entertainment district, literary connections, and personal anecdotes further enrich the experience.
Wine Experience in the Heart of the Avas: Tasting at Local Wineries
As part of the program, several local wineries offer tastings where participants can discover the characteristic flavors of the wine region and the traditions of local winemaking. Throughout the tour, the gastronomic experience and the historical background complement each other, providing an opportunity to uncover the stories hidden behind the wines.
Panorama Over the City: From the Avas Lookout to the Historic Church Garden
As a conclusion to the walk, participants arrive at the Avas Lookout, where the city panorama unfolds from a unique perspective. From here, the route leads back to the city center towards Erzsébet Square, passing by the Avas Reformed Church and the historic cemetery.
